• I'm Sara. I'm the mommy to two little boys, ages 2 and 7 years old. I was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitts Lymphoma in February 2007. I went through hi-dose chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. After all that I have been in remission for over a year now. I raise Ameraucana, Araucana, and Orpington chickens. We have a small herd of beef cattle. There are also 2 dogs and 2 cats here. I enjoy quilting, and try to work on project when I have time. I enjoy being at home, taking care of my kids, animals, and our home.

Spring is Almost Here

Spring is upon us, so don’t forget your daffodils.  I can’t imagine a better cause to support than the American Cancer Society.  This year the vase is a really pretty purple!

And speaking of spring, I wonder if I’ll be able to hatch enough spring chicks in this:

And more spring, a baby calf.  Amazingly it’s a bull calf, we had a real run of heifer calves, don’t think we have had a bull in a couple years.

Brent has his first baseball practice tonight.  He is very excited about it.  He also got to stay after school for the webkinz club yesterday because his behavior has been so much better.

And finally if you have a spare prayer.  Please pray for my dad, he could use it.

The latest happenings

I figured since it snowed leaving nothing much to do outside I should sit down and update.

I had my port removed on February 20th.  It feels like closure to the whole experience.  I hope that it allows me to begin to think of the future again.  Oddly enough I had it removed exactly two years after having it put in.  I had mentioned to my husband while waiting to be taken down to the operating room that it had to be around the same time.  Once I was home and settled I looked through my wallet and found the date on the card, February 20, 2007.   I thought it was ironic.

My husband turned 30 on the 25th of February.  It’s exciting to me because he’s been teasing me about it since Novemeber when I turned 30.

I’ve been sewing again.  I have so many quilt tops that need finished.  I did start one other quilt because I loved the one my mom made and just needed to have one too.  She wouldn’t give it to me so it left me no choice but to buy the fabric and do it.  I’m also doing two quilt block swaps online right not so there is lots of sewing that needs done.

I also made some cute chicken pin cushions after seeing the idea online.  I tried listing one on Ebay, but don’t know if anyone will find them as cute as I do.  Here is the listing.

Good news

Monday I had my regular CT scan and blood-work to make sure my cancer doesn’t return.  Blood Work was great, and scan is clear!  It’s been two years since my diagnosis, and 16 months since my stem cell transplant.  My doctor is happy with the way it has gone.  I am getting my mediport out on Friday at 1:00.  I’m very excited because I will no longer have to go to the hospital and have it flushed every four weeks.  I feel like I can finally return to normal, and try to start to put it in the past.!

Still here

Yesterday was the two year anniversary of my Diagnosis with cancer.  I spent a lot of the day reflecting on how blessed I am to be alive and well today.  The rest of the day I spent loafing around feeling sick from a terrible head coldish type thing that has taken over my family.  I really can’t believe how far I’ve come, and what I’ve been through in the last two years.  I’m just very thankful for all the people that have been there for me.  And like the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger”

img_2145I started hatching again, and here’s one of my little hatchies:  It’s a little orpington chick.  I haven’t hatched anything for several months, but I got the itch and figured why not?  By late summer they will be laying, well that is if I manage to hatch any pullets.  I’m gifted with the ability to only hatch cockerels.  I’ve been working on a project.  I’m building a cabinet incubator!  I’ve been using a hovabator 1583 which I really like, but clearly hatching 42 eggs is not enough.  My incubator should be able to hold at least a hundred.  I mean if you are going to do something you might as well do it in a big way right?  I priced cabinet incubators and they were in the 500+ range.  I don’t necassarily think that is too much, but don’t have that kind of money lieing around right now.  I used as many recylced items as possible, but did order the electrical components new.  I believe when it’s all said and done this incubator will cost my under 75.00.  It’s mostly done, except for the final drawer which I’m still debating the style in my head.  I’ve plugged it in and it holds temperature well, so I’m just about ready to give it a trial run!  Here’s what I have so far, although I have some ideas to pretty it up, after all it’s a girl’s incubator!   img_2149My goal’s for this year are to really work with my birds with the hope that by late in the year I have something worthy of showing.  I wasn’t sure I wanted to go that route, but I used to so love showing my sheep, that I think I’ll give it a try.  Speaking of sheep…  Yesterday I rode with my husband to pick up a part that he needed.  As I was sitting in the car waiting for him I had nothing to do but stare at the sheep there.  Oh how I miss my sheep.  I think I definately need to get some again.  Brent will be 8 this summer so that means    4-H is right around the corner.  Certianly he needs sheep for a project right?  Or at least it seems like a good excuse.

We have had a bunch of snow/ice storms.  I hate winter weather, but the rest of my family seems to enjoy it, so I figured I’d post a few pictures of them out enjoying it.

In other news, one of the girls I used to “babysit” (They weren’t babies) is getting married!  How weird is that?  How could I possibly be that old?  It just doesn’t seem right.  I got the save the date card in the mail, I’m excited, but it’s just weird.

Farm Show Fun

showheader

Yesterday the boys and I went to the PA Farm Show with my mom and dad.  It was a fun filled day.

First there were exhibits to see.  The boys loved this farm setup and Brent insisted that I had to take pictures of it.

After that there were free samples.  Fortunately for Travis they were giving out ice cream which is his favorite food.  He got some at several stands.  One place was giving out these adorable little cones:

Then it was time for silly pictures;

After we got through that there were balloon hats to be gotten and flowers to plant.  I forgot to take pictures of the little plants they planted.

After all that we looked at all the animals, and ate lunch.  Travis fell asleep on the shuttle bus back to the car.

Bathroom News:

In other exciting news my husband is working on my bathroom.  I may be able to take a bath in my jacuzzi tub soon!  He has the drain for the shower and tub installed, and started running the water lines.  I’ll have to get some progress photos to share.
